Lumbar spinal stenosis

Spinal stenosis can cause pain in the back, arms, legs and buttocks and occurs in a variety of ways in the spine. Most patients first visit their doctor with symptoms of spinal stenosis when sixty. Surgery is recommended if the pain limits your activity level or ability to walk.

Approximately 75 percent of spinal stenosis cases occur in the low back (lumbar spine) and affects the sciatic nerve which runs along the back of the leg. When this happens, it is commonly called sciatica.

The spinal nerve roots in the lower back are compressed or choked, resulting in great pain, tingling, weakness or numbness that starts from the lower back and spreads into the buttocks and legs. Some activities worsen the condition significantly.

How will the surgery be performed?
Pressure is relieved on the spinal cord with a procedure known as laminectomy – the removal of a small section of bone covering the back of the spinal cord.
What kind of anaesthesia will be needed?
General anaesthesia
How long will surgery take?
About three hours
Will I feel pain afterwards?
Little pain, easily controlled by medication, typically dissipating within a week but in some cases, it can last for four to six weeks. If the operation is successful, the arm pain should go immediately and any discomfort will be a result of the surgery. Longer surgeries will require longer recovery time.
How long is recovery?

Seven nights in hospital are usually required but in some cases, depending on the surgery, you may have to stay longer.

Physiotherapy can usually begin between one and two weeks afterwards depending on the patient's condition. A detailed rehabilitation programme will be explained to you by our physical therapist, including performing daily exercises to recover the range of motion and strengthen weakened muscles.

Follow-up consultations with a doctor are recommended after one, three and six months.

Will there be bruising and swelling?

Some bruising and swelling, usually disappearing within a month but some cases may require a longer healing time.

In the case of surgically-induced nerve injury or structural instability, additional surgeries may be required but these instances are rare.

Will I have to remove the stitches?
Stitches will be removed by the surgeon after one week
