Cervical disc herniation

Cervical disc herniation

One of the most common spine treatments is when pain occurs in the arms from a cervical (upper spine and neck) herniated (slipped) disc.

This complication often develops for people between 30 and 50 years of age. Although a cervical herniated disc may originate from some sort of trauma or injury to the cervical spine, the symptoms, including arm pain, often start spontaneously.

The arm pain occurs when the herniated disc presses or strikes a cervical nerve, causing pain which spreads along the nerve pathway down the arm. Other symptoms such as numbness, tingling and muscle weakness can also be attributed to a slipped disc.

Information about the surgery

Information about the surgery

Cervical spine surgery treats either:

  • Spinal instability (fusion surgery)
  • Decompression

In many cases, both surgeries are combined as decompression may destabilise the spine and create the need for a fusion to retain stability. Spinal instrumentation (such as a small plate) can also be used to help stabilise the spinal construct.

Spine surgery for cervical disc herniation might be a good solution for pain lasting longer than six to twelve weeks or if the pain is severe. It is very reliable and can be done with a minimal amount of postoperative pain and complications, especially with the experienced surgeons and doctors at FV Hospital. The success rate of this surgery is 95 per cent-98 per cent for cessation of arm pain.

How will surgery be performed?

After reviewing your condition, the doctor will advise on the two surgical options:

  1. Anterior cervical discectomy and spine fusion
The most common and preferred method for treatment of cervical disc herniation, involving the removal of the disc through a small incision in the front of the neck.
The disc space created will be fused. For a successful fusion and increased stability, a plate can be inserted in front of the graft.
  2. Anterior discectomy without spine fusion
The space created by the removal of a disc is left open and no bone for a fusion is inserted. Even without a bone graft, fusion still occurs but may take longer and with unpredictable results.
How long will surgery take?
About three hours.
Will I feel pain afterwards?
Little pain, easily controlled by medication. Typically, the pain should dissipate within a week but in some cases, it can last for four to six weeks. If the operation is successful, the arm pain should go away immediately and any discomfort will be a result of the surgery.
How long is recovery?

Four nights in hospital are usually required and a neck brace is needed for a period of time determined by your condition. Recovery begins immediately but you are advised to avoid strenuous physical activity for some time.

Physiotherapy can usually begin between one and two weeks afterwards depending on the patient's condition. You will follow a detailed rehabilitation program explained to you by our physical therapist, including performing daily exercises to recover the range of motion and strengthen weakened muscles.

Follow-up consultations with a doctor are recommended after one, three and six months.

Will there be bruising and swelling?
Some bruises and swelling disappearing within a month.
Will I have to remove the stitches?
Stitches will be removed by the surgeon after one week

    “Riverway to Cu Chi”

Cu Chi Tunnels is a massive system of tunnels combining to form an underground city during the American/Vietnam War. It has become a popular and must-see destination for many travellers. Buffalo Tours would like to offer you a new and exceptional way to discover this historical site: the trip combines a cruise, cultural experiences and history.

At its height, the tunnel system stretched over 250 kilometres from Saigon to the Cambodian border and was three levels deep. The network included innumerable trap doors, specially constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, command centres and kitchens. Today the remaining tunnels have become a major tourist attraction giving the visitor a unique experience and a feel for what underground life in the American/Vietnam war must have been like. The tunnels have been widened for your benefit (otherwise you would not be able to enter them!).

Leaving Saigon in the early morning, we board our speed boat from Saigon dock and leave the bustling city behind. From the boat, the city skyline gradually fades and is soon replaced by lush river banks. From the boat you can observe the daily life on the river. Along the way, you will stop at a lively market of Binh Duong Province, renowned for its variety of produce, from fresh seafood to flowers, fruits and traditional herbs. After visiting the market, you will enjoy a tea break in a local house before continuing to Cu Chi.

Upon arrival at Cu Chi, you will watch a short introductory video on the tunnels’ construction. You will then spend the next hour exploring the maze of tunnels. Also on display are various man traps and the remains of an American tank, as well as numerous bomb craters made by 500-pound bombs dropped by B52 bombers. You then drive back to Ho Chi Minh City, arriving at approximately 2:00pm.
